Why use an online notepad?

Online notepad for coding and Java notes

A plain notepad is one of the most useful tools for students during placement season. Keep a running list of questions you got wrong, paste a code snippet while you debug, or draft answers to common HR questions before an interview. Switch on Code mode and Tab indent to write neat snippets, and use Sort lines and Remove duplicate lines to tidy lists of keywords or questions.

If you are learning Java, pair this notepad with our guide to Java interview questions for freshers and the Java programming guides, and write each concept in your own words. Explaining something in your own words is one of the best ways to remember it.

Tips for keeping your notes safe

Frequently asked questions

Is this online notepad really free?

Yes. It is completely free, with no account, no sign-up, no trial and no hidden limits. Just open the page and start typing.

Does the notepad save automatically?

Yes. Every change is saved to your browser a moment after you stop typing, so you never need a save button. The status bar under the editor shows when your latest change has been saved.

Where are my notes stored?

Your notes are stored in your own browser using localStorage. They are not uploaded to our servers, so we cannot read them, and we cannot recover them for you either.

Will I lose my notes if I close the tab or restart my computer?

No. Notes stay in your browser until you delete them or clear your site data. You will lose them if you clear browser data, use a private window or switch browsers, so download a backup of anything important.

Does the online notepad work offline?

Yes, after your first visit. Your browser keeps a copy of the page and its code, so you can open it and keep writing without an internet connection. Your notes are always stored on your own device.

Can I use it on my phone or tablet?

Yes. The notepad works in any modern browser on phones, tablets, Chromebooks, Windows, Mac and Linux. On supported browsers you can also install it to your home screen.

How do I download my notes as a text file?

Click the .txt button above the editor, or press Ctrl+S (Cmd+S on a Mac). Use the .md button for a Markdown file, or Backup to save every note at once in a single file.

How do I move my notes to another device?

Click Backup to download a file containing all your notes, then open this notepad on the other device and click Import to load it.

I deleted a note by mistake. Can I get it back?

Right after deleting you will see an Undo button for a few seconds. After that the note is gone, which is why regular backups are worth it.

Is it safe to store passwords in an online notepad?

No. Notes are not encrypted, so anyone who can use your browser could read them. Keep passwords, bank details and other highly sensitive information in a password manager instead.

Can I use it for coding or Java notes?

Yes. Turn on Code mode for a monospace font, enable Tab indent for two-space indentation and switch off Wrap for long lines. It is handy for snippets, interview answers and quick scratch work.

Is there a limit on how much I can write?

The notepad has no fixed limit, but browsers typically allow a few megabytes of storage per website, which is enough for a very large amount of text. If storage ever fills up, download a backup and delete old notes.
